History of Creation of Be Safe Driving!
Be Safe Driving was officially established in 2020, emerging directly from a critical need identified during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that point, Mississippi made a significant decision to temporarily suspend the driving portion of the road test for obtaining a driver’s license through driver services. While this was a practical measure during the pandemic, it inadvertently created a gap in ensuring new drivers were adequately prepared for the road.
As a Mississippi State Trooper, I found myself in a unique position. Many friends, colleagues, and members of my community, concerned about their children's safety and readiness, began approaching me. They knew my experience and trusted my judgment, asking if I would ride with their children to assess their driving skills and provide guidance before they hit the road independently. Naturally, I agreed, dedicating my time to help these young drivers gain the confidence and competence they needed.
What started as informal assistance quickly revealed a widespread demand for structured, high-quality driver training that focused on genuine road readiness, not just passing a test. Recognizing this crucial need, I felt compelled to formalize my efforts, leading to the creation of Be Safe Driving. My goal was to offer a comprehensive and safety-focused program that filled the void left by the pandemic's impact on driver’s services, ensuring that new drivers received the practical skills and responsible mindset necessary for safe navigation.
Years later, with new state mandates and an ever-evolving driving landscape, my commitment has only deepened. I have continuously developed and refined our curriculum, building upon the foundational principles of safe driving I’ve always taught. This expanded curriculum now integrates additional information, up-to-date resources, and practical techniques to address modern driving challenges. My enduring motivation stems from a profound belief in fostering responsible drivers and contributing to safer roads for everyone in our community.
